Yellow Thalassiosira Portrait tells the story of microscopic marine being from a variety of views and with varying styles. A dramatic image of the diatom Thalassioria stands in contrast to circular forms derived from less outwardly complex plankton and textures from cubes of marine salt.
Composed in layers, an image capture complete with size measurements sits against loose drawing of diatoms and salt. As a whimsical touch referencing the lacey appearance of Thalassiosira, bits of real lace and gold trim enhance the image. The overall background reminds us that this a watery world.

Lacey Thalassiosira highlights a microscopic being as a surreal creature. It began with a grayscale image of microscopic plankton from my own micro-photos. Several images emerged from this session; here I combine enlarged details of texture from other images and fragments of other points of view by cutting and pasting together physical prints and drawing on them. Once back into the computer, the background and solid color elements came from more combining from whatever I grabbed in that space. The colors are purely whimisical and expressionist.
