Image in new series inspired by the imperative to note the cycles of the moon for the purpose of keeping accurate calendars. Drawing inspiration from Hebrew medieval calendars, and medieval Islamic scientific studies, it also incorporates NASA representations of moons.

The series began when I visited the Ulugh Beg Observatory in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Built in the 1420s by the Timurid astronomer Ulugh Beg, it was a center of Islamic scientific research. I am interested in the confluence of the Islamic and Judaic imperatives to keep track of moon cycles for the purpose of creating accurate calendars for reigious observance. I am equally inspired by a Hebrew calendar (Book of Intercalations)from Fulda, 1668, Sefer Evronot, which includes references to Christian holidays, which I photographed extensively. I am just at the beginning of this series.
